Just What Is Online Development? | Online Success Articles

?

The term ?web development? has expanded and advanced a great deal in the last decade. It used to be that having an internet existence was a novelty, something to throw on a business card or in a commercial. Websites were reserved for the businesses with the means to spread them widely, or for individuals that didn?t care who observed what they posted.

Web development is noticeably different these days. The end objective is the same? a site on the Internet designed to market an organization, service or firm. These days you could also sell products and services, correspond directly with the business and do so much more. What is web development these days?

Web development has actually come to be a mixture of discipline and also art, just the same as marketing. To succeed online, one needs to understand exactly what to do as well as just what not to do so that a search engine picks them up. On top of that, a website has to be produced for the ultimate utility and usability. We?ve come a long way from the days of frames, embedded music and animated backgrounds. A web page is a major tool for serious enterprises.

Another major distinction is the procedure. Web composition is no longer about setting up a descriptive page and letting it sit. Sites have to be consistently updated, with material suitable for the business and their intentions. Going too long without an update loses visitors and also loses trust. Social media websites have a substantial influence in this too. A firm that ties their internet existence into sociable media is a lot more in touch with their readers and can benefit directly from that contact.

Once again, what is web development? It?s all relating to the online presence. Holding a presence on the internet is just as essential as having a physical storefront, and takes just as much work. Designing an internet site concerns style and substance, the balance amidst a fancy site and a site that can be utilized by all. All of this needs to be carefully planned and implemented by talented designers and online developers that know the markets and know exactly what they?re doing.

Thankfully, there are a lot of proficient designers out on the market, all set to create the perfect website for any type of business, local or otherwise. As complex as it is creating an internet site, there are individuals who make it their life?s work. Virtually every great website these days has a proficient developer behind it, and it shows. That?s web development.

Wendy Strgar: Open to Change

"Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like." -- Lao Tzu

For as many euphemisms as there are about how life is always changing, most of us often struggle with the reality of change itself. It is no wonder, as the skill of holding onto ourselves with nothing solid beneath us remains untested ground no matter how often we experience it. Intuitively, we know that the process of change and where it will lead is not really ours to control, so that even the big life changes we initiate often require a magnitude of surrender that we cannot anticipate. In part this is because of what we have all suspected, our neurological wiring is geared toward consistency. Our brains want and need stability so much that we often create it erroneously. Recent reports demonstrate how our social and political affiliations blind us to our own inconsistencies and misattribute these inconsistencies to our opponents.

George Bernard Shaw once said: "Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything." If there is any truly effective preparation for change, it begins with our mind. The most impressive surfers of change are people that would be described as continuous learners, who are not only actively looking for new information but even more willing to challenge their previous belief systems. If there is a fountain of youth to be tapped, it is here, in a mind that stays young through wonder and a willingness to let go. If we are not able to change our minds, we lose in so many ways. Emotional story lines become grudges that separate you sometimes for decades from people you love. New experiences, from taste to technology, become something to avoid instead of relish.

Worse still, when life's biggest changes come to shake up the world as we know it, our minds are often too rigid to respond. Traumas and tragedies of all kinds from natural disasters, the random hand of illness, and freak accidents fill the news every day. A learning nimble mind has the flexibility to experience grief and fear, without identifying with them. A life that isn't trained to open to change through the cultivation of flexibility has no resilience to fall back on when unpredictable life events occur.

In fact, the only way to open to change is to give up our resistance to it. This letting go is the easiest and hardest thing in the world to accomplish. The power of opening to the present moment and letting things be what they are is a simple act, and in many ways a great relief. It is also a spiritual feat to embrace the moments you are in, especially the painful moments.

On a practical level, this means witnessing the truth. About 95 percent of the 60,000 thoughts we are estimated to have each day are the same ones we had yesterday and the day before that. Repetitive thinking is not a friend to change. I was reminded of this while with my son as we reviewed the last 200 years of American history for an AP test. While history does provide a remarkable context for understanding how we got to this point, my biases would get easily inflamed by his recounting of many of the embarrassing racist and imperialist acts that have paved our collective history. In his infinite wisdom, he looked at me the other day and said quietly, "Mom, can we just learn this?"

Next time you are stuck between what you think you know and the changing world around you, ask that simple question, "Can we learn this?" Choosing to learn is how you open to change. A learning mind makes a flexible heart and opens in ways that will surprise you. And all this time we thought being right was what mattered.

ACLU lawsuit challenges Ill. gay marriage ban

CHICAGO (AP) ? More than two dozen gay and lesbian couples filed lawsuits Wednesday arguing that it's unconstitutional for Illinois to deny them the right to marry, a move advocates hope will lead to legalized same-sex marriage in the state.

The two lawsuits ? backed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois and the New York-based gay advocacy group Lambda Legal ? include couples from the Chicago area, Bloomington and Marion. Both challenge a state law that defines marriage as between a man and woman, arguing that the Illinois Constitution guarantees the right for same-sex couples to marry under due process and equality clauses.

Legislation to eliminate the law's language that prohibits gay marriage is pending, but a vote isn't expected before the legislative session is scheduled to end this week. And although Illinois enacted same-sex civil unions last year, couples in the lawsuits said the limited rights and protections make them feel like second-class citizens.

The lead plaintiffs in the ACLU lawsuit, which includes nine couples, are Chicago police detective Tanya Lazaro and systems analyst Elizabeth Matos. The women, who've been together 15 years and have two children, reject the notion of a civil union.

"It's not the same thing as a marriage. We want our relationship, our love and our commitment we've shown for 15 years to be recognized like everybody else's," Lazaro said. "When you're growing up, you don't dream of civil unions."

It's unclear how the state will handle the legal process with the case, but attorneys are ready to take the case to the state Supreme Court. The defendant named in the case is in favor of gay marriage as is Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn. A message left for Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez was not immediately returned Wednesday.

The 25 couples in both lawsuits tried to apply for marriage licenses in Cook County, but were denied. The lawsuit names Cook County Clerk David Orr. A spokeswoman said Orr was out of the country and had not seen the lawsuit, but issued a statement on his behalf.

"The time is long past due for the State of Illinois to allow County Clerks to issue marriage licenses to couples who want to make that commitment," he said. "I hope this lawsuit clears the last hurdle to achieving equal marriage rights for all."

Currently, the District of Columbia and six states ? Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont ? have legalized gay marriage, either because of legislation or the courts.

Courts decided for gay marriage in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa. A lawsuit challenging an Iowa law barring gay marriage prompted the Iowa Supreme Court to legalize it in 2009. However, the three justices up for retention elections the next year were voted off the bench after being targeted by groups angered by the court's decision.

Lambda Legal filed the Iowa lawsuit in 2005, and advocates say the time for Illinois is now.

It's a year after same-sex civil unions were enacted, and recent polls show public support for same-sex marriage has steadily increased. President Barack Obama said earlier this month that he endorsed gay marriage, and Quinn stepped up his public support.

"We've waited long enough," said John Knight, director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Project of the ACLU of Illinois. "It certainly helps that our president from the great state of Illinois has come forward and been a leader in recognizing freedom of same sex couples to marry."

Civil unions give same-sex couples some, but not all, of the same legal rights and protections as marriage in Illinois, such as the power to decide medical treatment for a partner and to inherit a partner's property. When that law was approved, however, opponents including some religious and conservative groups said it was an unwanted step toward gay marriage.

"The courts shouldn't mandate it. Nobody should mandate homosexual marriage," said Colleen Nolen, director of the conservative Concerned Women for America.

Lambda Legal, whose lawsuit has 16 couples, and the ACLU share the same goal to legalize gay marriage in Illinois but decided to pursue separate lawsuits because they have different historic missions. The lawsuits also slightly differ in legal reasoning.

Lambda Legal's lawsuit includes Janean Watkins and Lakeesha Harris, who were the first couple in line last year to get a civil union license from Cook County. They have been together for a dozen years and are raising six children, who are the reason Watkins wants to be married.

"We have the kids, it's important for them to see that the relationship we're in is validated by the state," she said.

(AP) ? The debt crisis that has ravaged Europe for the best part of three years has exposed a dislike of the single currency but little desire to abandon it, a wide-ranging survey of public opinion found Tuesday.

Pew Research Center's survey across eight European Union countries, including five members of the 17-country eurozone, indicated that the region's financial problems have triggered full-blown fears about the future of Europe as a political project.

"This crisis of confidence is evident in the economy, in the future, in the benefits of European economic integration, in EU membership, in the euro and in the free market system," Pew said in a statement accompanying its survey.

Despite those concerns, Pew found there was no desire for those countries that use the euro to return to their former currencies, such as the French franc or the Spanish peseta. The euro launched in 1999 and is now used by 17 countries.

In Greece, the epicenter of the debt crisis, 71 percent of those polled want to keep the euro, as against to 23 percent that want to return to the drachma. More people in Greece, which is now in its fifth year of a savage recession, think the euro has been good for them than bad ? 46 percent of those surveyed compared to 26 percent who thought it was a bad thing.

These findings may be crucial as Greece heads to the polls on June 17 in a general election many see as a referendum on the country's euro membership.

Varvara Konstantopoulou, a 65-year-old pensioner in Athens, summed up the dilemma that is at the heart of a country that is trapped between indefinite austerity and a catastrophic currency exit.

"I don't think the euro helped us. When we joined everything became more expensive," she said. "But we are trapped now. If we leave the euro, our money will not be worth anything. It's worse for people on a fixed income."

Her 45-year-old unemployed daughter, Alexia, agreed with her mother that Greece was not ready for the euro when it joined in 2001. However, she thinks the euro will survive but that in the future countries should get a grip on their public finances so there's no repeat of the current crisis.

"Otherwise they will end up like us," she said. "Every country should sort out its own problems, but they have to help us to keep things going smoothly (for the euro)."

Recent opinion polls in Greece have suggested there's a movement towards political parties, notably the conservative New Democracy, that are willing to meet the commitments the country has already made in return for its bailout lifeline.

Though Pew found little appetite for abandoning the euro, the survey revealed a prevailing skepticism over Europe's single currency.

More people in France, Italy and Spain think the euro has been more damaging than beneficial. In Italy, which has the second-highest debt burden in the eurozone after Greece, 44 percent of those people surveyed said the euro has been a bad thing, as opposed to 30 percent who think it has done good. Italy is also home to the biggest anti-euro constituency, with 40 percent of those polled wanting to return to the lira as against to 52 percent backing the euro.

Among the five euro countries surveyed there wasn't one where a majority ? over 50 percent ? of those polled thought the currency has been beneficial.

In Germany, Europe's biggest economy, more people thought it was beneficial than damaging.

"It's got a lot of advantages," said Andreas Schwanekamp, an office worker in Frankfurt, Germany. "We don't have to exchange currency when we leave the country."

Germany's exporters have benefited from the relatively low value of the euro against other key currencies such as the dollar when compared to what the deutschemark would likely be trading at.

"We're an exporter," Schwanekamp, 47, added. "If we still had the deutschemark, we would be more expensive relative to the other currencies in Europe."

The survey also found that two-thirds of Germans want to keep the currency even though the country has to make the biggest contributions to the financial bailouts.

Among the countries surveyed that did not have the euro as their currency there were big majorities in Britain, the Czech Republic and Poland who thought it has been better for them not to have been in the euro bloc.

In Washington, the Obama administration announced Tuesday it had dispatched its top international finance official to Europe for a round of discussions.

U.S. Treasury Undersecretary for International Affairs Lael Brainard was holding discussions with senior government officials in Athens on Tuesday. She was scheduled to meet with officials in Frankfurt, Germany, and Madrid, Spain, on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Brainard will meet with officials in Paris and Berlin and will wrap up her trip with further discussions in Berlin on Friday.

The U.S. Treasury said in a statement that Brainard would meet with "senior government officials in each country to discuss their plans for achieving economic stability and growth in Europe."

The Pew surveys were conducted by telephone in some countries and face-to-face in others between mid-March and mid-April, with at least 1,000 people surveyed in each country. The margin of error varied by country, from 3.3 percent to 4.4 percent.

Think Congress is sophomoric? A study says you're right

WASHINGTON?

? If it sounds like the debates in Congress have devolved into those of teenagers, it's because they have.

Discourse in the House and Senate has dropped a full grade level ? to the equivalent of high school sophomore, according to a new study.

Call this the dumbing down of Congress in a partisan age. Or a shift to plain-spoken populism ignited by the new class of tea party Republicans.

But what has become clear in the new research is that the soaring oratory that once filled the floors of the House and Senate with million-dollar diction and sophisticated syntax is making way for a more modest approach.

"Congress is changing as an institution, and what you see is more and more members gearing their speeches as sound bites or YouTube clips," said Lee Drutman, a senior fellow at the nonpartisan Sunlight Foundation, which compiled the study released Monday.

"You can [hark] back to a golden age of Congress when members quoted Shakespeare on the floor and really engaged in debate and talked to each other and tried to reason back and forth," he said.

Consider Everett M. Dirksen, the legendary Republican senator from Illinois, who defended a civil rights bill in 1964 by paraphrasing 19th century French writer Victor Hugo: "Stronger than all the armies is an idea whose time has come."

But that was then.

In an analysis of floor debates over the last several years, the study found that newer lawmakers tended to speak at a lower grade level than the veterans of congressional speechifying.

And political moderates among both Republicans and Democrats tended to carry on at a higher grade level than those more partisan liberals or conservatives.

With that framework in mind, it should come as no surprise that the lawmakers at the bottom of the list, speaking at the lowest grade level, are among the most ardent tea party Republicans in the freshman class. Rep. Mick Mulvaney of South Carolina, Rep. Robert Woodall of Georgia and Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky were the bottom three ? speaking at about an eighth-grade level, the study found.

"We look at it as a badge of honor," said Mulvaney, a graduate of Georgetown University and the University of North Carolina Law School, who notes that he often speaks on the floor "extemporaneously."

"It's a conscious decision on my part. We are trying to be clear and trying to be concise," he added. He said he and his wife had been known to diagram sentences at the dinner table, a byproduct of having schoolteacher parents.

"I can explain the difference between 'fewer' and 'less,'" Mulvaney said, but he acknowledged that he still stumbled over the difference between "farther" and "further."

"I don't think people see the polysyllabic words ? or the number of words ? in a sentence as a sign of your intelligence," he said.

As a case in point, he cites fellow Republican Rep. Dan Lungren of Gold River, a seasoned politician who topped the list as the lawmaker with the highest level of speech ? that of a college senior.

That makes Lungren almost a throwback ? on par with the Federalist Papers (a 17.1 grade level) or the U.S. Constitution (17.8 grade level) ? though it is not clear his speeches are easier to understand.

"The canard that somehow we are tearing the Constitution up just does not stand any kind of inquiry whatsoever," Lungren said during a debate over the Patriot Act. "The suggestion that somehow we are invading the civil liberties of citizens is negated by the language in the three sections of the bill that we have before us."

Californians ranked among the better spoken overall, and the No. 2 slot went to Rep.Lucille Roybal-Allard(D-East Los Angeles), at almost a 16th-grade level. Her skills were on display during last week's debate on a GOP version of the Violence Against Women Act that Democrats largely opposed.

"I cannot in good conscience vote to pass this version of VAWA, as it erases 18 years of bipartisan efforts to respond to the needs of victims of domestic violence," she said. "I am also disappointed that, yet again, provisions to alleviate the economic factors that keep victims in abusive relationships have not been included."

The best and worst speeches may be in the ear of the listener, and the study noted that President Obama's 2012 State of the Union address was judged by other researchers to rank at the eighth-grade level for the third year in a row.

As for those high-powered words from the Scholastic Assessment Test, memorized and recited by legions of high schoolers, they go virtually unspoken in Congress.

Of the 100 words on SAT preparation study lists, 14 are missing entirely from the Congressional Record for this Congress ? notably "florid," "hackneyed," "ostentatious" and "querulous."

The most-used SAT word ? "compromise" ? was said the most by Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.), the majority leader, who is fond of declaring, "Legislation is the art of compromise."

But in this partisan environment, as the study noted, even saying the word 142 times "does not make it so."

GaryMoller.com - Health, Fitness - Naturally!: Exercise prescription ...

Here's an essay by my daughter, Mary-Ann Moller, who is studying sport and exercise nutrition at University of Otago. I think a little of her Dad has rubbed off onto her! ?What do you think about what she is saying? ?Is she right? ?Is there a tendency to create dependence? ?Please post your response, thanks. ?Incidentally, she got 100% for this essay.

Here's the statement that she had to respond to:

Increasingly exercise is being advocated as a treatment strategy for a range of?medical conditions. In response, a new field of 'clinical exercise prescription' has?evolved. Clinical exercise specialists aim to prescribe safe and physiologically?sound programmes. These specialists working with clients in clinical settings?often create a dependence that effectively changes the client's perception of?physical activity or exercise. We encourage this dependence by over-complicating?exercise prescription.

Consider the above statement and provide well argued support for your interpretation of?the statement.

Exercise prescription experts working in the clinical setting overly complicate exercise prescription creating a dependency. This tendency to encourage the individual to brainlessly defer to the ?expert? is symptomatic of what is happening throughout modern society: The insidious process of disempowerment of the individual and the granting of their power of choice to both the State and to the professional Expert. The two drivers of this process are the desire of others to get their hands on the hard-earned dollars of the individual and the ever-growing need by the State to have total control over every aspect of its citizens? lives.?

An expert is a person who belongs to a secretive organisation, called a ?profession?. For a group to be a profession it must have, in addition to rituals of initiation, such as exams and internship, it must have its own secret language in the form of special acronyms and long-winded words.?

In the profession of orthopaedics, for example, indecipherable acronyms abound. These leave the prostate patient in a state of confused awe and helplessness before the God-like specialist.

The diagnosis,?IDKJ?, is authoritatively pronounced by the orthopaedic surgeon and recorded for posterity upon the ?God-Sheet?. Upon viewing this pronouncement from On High, all those down the priestly line of command obediently respond with appropriate mutterings of agreement and the patient is anointed with ritualistic treatments, such as ultrasound and core conditioning. ?IDKJ?, if you would like to know, is priestly code for ?Internal derangement of the knee joint?. That still does not mean much at all to the unwashed. There are actually codes within codes. IDKJ has three meanings. Translated from professional orthopaedic jargon, ?IDKJ? actually means ?You have something wrong with your knee?. But wait - there?s more to this code. It really means ?I Don?t Know Jack-shit?. Only those high up within the orthopaedic priesthood know that one! So, if they don?t know jack-shit about what is going on with a person?s sore knee, why don?t they say so? The reason why they do not is because doing so would be giving away some of the power they have over the individual.

Knowledge is Power: with Ignorance it is Control

This process of disempowerment is in evidence within clinical exercise prescription. The average reading age of New Zealand adults is 13 years, so why use words like ?biceps? or ?abdominals? when working with a patient when ?upper arm? and ?tummy? will suffice? Why teach incredibly complex and potentially dangerous exercise routines that involve teetering on an over-sized ball that requires constant supervision to prevent complete confusion and inevitable injury from falling off when the same could be achieved with mowing the lawn with a hand-mower or digging the garden with a spade? Which is better when it comes to real practical rehabilitation? Unless the patients are in training for the next Swiss Ball Olympics!

Further complicating matters for the patient is the drive by over-inflated egos which require constant pumping. Experts need to totally bamboozle their patients to create a dependency which will keep pumping hard to ensure their ego doesn't deflate. Utter complexity with the aid of exclusive props (very expensive exercise machines), along with not really understanding a single word of the professional language ensures patients keep coming back. And this of course equals profit!

Exercise prescription must of course address the health issue at hand, but needs to be in a form that the individual can apply to their unique personal circumstances, relevant to their everyday life. It must be based on their lifestyle and what they prefer to do, without reliance on expensive and fairly inaccessible exercise equipment. When a patient goes to a rehabilitation clinic they are expected to leave their brain in the carpark. Instead, exercise prescription should empower the individual. Experts should be telling the patient ?when you get out of the car, don't forget your brain, because you will be needing it!?.

Are Eyewitnesses in the Zimmerman Trial Reliable?

Newly released court documents in the second-degree-murder case against neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman reveal that, in the month following his fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26, four key witnesses significantly changed their accounts of what they saw and heard that night. The more recent versions of their memories tend to be more damning of Zimmerman than their initial statements.

Which raises the question: How reliable are eyewitnesses?

For example, days after the shooting, one woman told police she had seen two men running through the streets and then engaging in a fistfight. Less than one month later, she told investigators she saw just one person running, and couldn't describe his or her appearance as she hadn't had her contact lenses in at the time.

Another witness, who was initially interviewed March 20, said she saw two people on the ground immediately after the shooting but was not sure which one was on top. In another interview with investigators six days later, she said it had definitely been Zimmerman on top, explaining that she was sure because she had been able to compare Zimmerman's and Martin's sizes after seeing them on TV.

A third witness originally said he saw a black man (presumably Martin) pinning down and punching a lighter-skinned man (Zimmerman) who was calling for help. Later, the witness wasn't sure any punches were thrown or that he had heard distress calls.

And a man who initially described Zimmerman as looking bloody and in shock after the shooting later implied the shooter had been calm, cool and collected.

Why do people's memories change over time? And which versions of these witnesses' stories are to be believed ? the earlier ones untarnished by time, or the later ones, perhaps less sullied by what may have been false impressions imbued early on by news reports or police interviewers?

The reliability of witness testimony is a vastly complex subject, but legal scholars and forensic psychologists say it's possible to extract the truth from contradictory accounts and evolving memories. According to Barbara Tversky, professor emerita of psychology at Stanford University, the bottom line is this: "All other things equal, earlier recountings are more likely to be accurate than later ones. The longer the delay, the more likely that subsequent information will get confused with the target memory."

However, in some cases not all other things are equal.

How we remember

Memory is a reconstructive process, says Richard Wise, a forensic psychologist at the University of North Dakota. "When an eyewitness recalls a crime, he or she must reconstruct his or her memory of the crime." This, he says, is an unconscious process. To reconstruct a memory, the eyewitness draws upon several sources of information, only one being his or her actual recollection.

"To fill in gaps in memory, the eyewitness relies upon his or her expectation, attitudes, prejudices, bias, and prior knowledge. Furthermore, information supplied to an eyewitness after a crime (i.e., post-event information) by the police, prosecutor, other eyewitnesses, media, etc., can alter an eyewitness's memory of the crime," Wise said in an email. [How Are Memories Stored in the Brain?]

That external input is what makes eyewitness testimony so unreliable. Eyewitnesses are generally unaware that their memory has been altered by post-event information, and feel convinced they're recalling only the incident itself. "Once an eyewitness's memory of the crime has been altered by post-event information, it is difficult or impossible to restore the eyewitness's original memory of the crime," Wise told Life's Little Mysteries.

Elizabeth Loftus, a law professor at University of California at Irvine, said of the Zimmerman case, "There was so much media coverage that it could be that the new information that Trayvon Martin had died, that he was unarmed, the new information about the outcry and outrage, had the potential for contaminating and distorting the witnesses' memory."

Although the eyewitnesses' earlier accounts of that fateful night ? descriptions that were generally less damning of Zimmerman ? might be closer to the truth, they aren't what the jury will hear during the trial.

On the witness stand

According to Clifford Fishman, a law professor at the Catholic University of America, a jury tends to accept as accurate the version of events a witness describes when testifying ? "even if that version is inconsistent in many significant ways with that witness's earlier statements." In other words, legally, the later versions of memories reign supreme. The burden falls to the defense attorneys to point out the weaknesses or inconsistencies in the witness's testimony at trial, and to cast doubt in the minds of the jurors about the accuracy of the witness's descriptions. [What is Reasonable Doubt?]

The prosecutors can retaliate by disputing the witness's earlier accounts; to do this, they might demonstrate that the police had initially asked leading questions or otherwise influenced the witnesses' statements in a way that made them more sympathetic of Zimmerman. In that case, the witnesses' later descriptions could be proved more trustworthy.

Furthermore, it could be that later additions to accounts, as with the witness who initially did not know whether she had seen Zimmerman or Martin on top during their fight, but later named Zimmerman, it could be that her fuller memory really had been triggered by seeing Zimmerman on television. "Appropriate cues given afterwards can retrieve additional reliable information that was not originally retrieved," Tversky noted.

Either way, Loftus said, "It looks like these witnesses are going to have some explaining to do. If they use version two of their stories in court, one attorney or the other is going have access to version one. And that can make the case against Zimmerman weaker."

Accused Etan Patz killer on suicide watch

A former bodega stock clerk has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and killing 6-year-old Etan Patz in New York City in 1979. WNBC-TV's Jonathan Dienst reports.

By Jonathan Dienst and Shimon Prokupecz, NBCNewYork.com

A former bodega stock clerk arrested for allegedly luring 6-year-old Etan Patz off a SoHo street and strangling him in a basement has been placed on suicide watch at a hospital as a precaution, NBC 4 New York has learned.

Pedro Hernandez, 51, was taken to Bellevue Friday, a source familiar with the case said. He had been set to be arraigned after police announced his arrest in the 1979 missing child case that has mystified New York City for decades.

A hospital bedside arraignment was expected Friday afternoon.

Hernandez is in isolation and receiving a medical evaluation at the hospital. Another source told NBC 4 New York that this evaluation is precautionary and that such extra steps in a case like this are often routine.

Relatives have said Hernandez has a history of some mental issues. His court-appointed lawyer, Harvey Fishbein, declined to comment Friday, saying he hadn't met with his client yet.

Patz vanished on his way to a school bus stop 33 years ago Friday. The case drew international attention and changed the way parents felt about letting their young children go off alone.

For more, visit NBCNewYork.com

Police said Hernandez had admitted to luring Patz into a bodega where he worked, near the boy's house, and choking him to death in the basement. ? ?

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said police focused on Hernandez, who now lives in Maple?Shade, N.J., after the Missing Persons Squad received a tip from someone who remembered Hernandez speaking of having killed a child.

"In the years following Etan's disappearance, Hernandez had told a family member, and others, that he had 'done a bad thing' and killed a child in New York," Kelly said.

Based on that information, police went to question Hernandez.

Kelly said Hernandez, who worked at the bodega for about a month, confessed to police after he was picked up Wednesday night. Some of the interviews were conducted at the scene of the crime, Kelly said.

Kelly said the suspect had not given a reason for attacking Patz and said there was "no reason at this time" to suspect the boy was sexually abused. He said it was "unlikely" Patz's remains would ever be found and that Hernandez told them he put the boy's body in the trash.

Hernandez's lawyer on Friday asked reporters to be respectful of some of Hernandez's relatives assembled at the courthouse, including his wife, daughter and another man, who huddled together on a wooden bench, turning away interview requests for more than an hour.

"It's a tough day. The family is upset. Please give them some space,'' Fishbein said.

His sister, Maria, who did not want her last name used, told NBC 4 New York on?Thursday that her heart ached over the news of her brother's arrest and said she couldn't believe it. She said Hernandez had three children of his own and came from a family of 12 that emigrated from Puerto Rico in 1973.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Thursday that the disappearance of Patz "broke the hearts of millions" across the nation, especially parents, and expressed sympathy again for the boy's family.

"I certainly hope that we are one step closer to bringing them some measure of relief," he said.

Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance had pledged to reopen the decades-old cold case when he took office in 2010.

See a timeline of the case here

The exhaustive search for Patz was renewed several weeks ago when police dug up the basement of a handyman's workshop near where Patz disappeared. A new layer of concrete had been laid over the foundation of the basement shortly after the boy vanished.

That search yielded no new evidence.

A lawyer for the handyman, Othniel Miller, said his client is "relieved by these developments, as he was not involved in any way with Etan Patz's disappearance."

One other man had remained a longtime possible suspect: Jose Ramos, a drifter and onetime boyfriend of Patz's baby sitter. But there was no hard evidence linking Ramos to the crime.

He is in prison in Pennsylvania on a separate case.

The boy's parents, Stan and Julie Patz, were reluctant to move or even change their phone number in case their son tried to reach out. They still live in the same apartment, down the street from the building that was examined in April. They have endured decades of false leads, and a lack of hard evidence.???? ?

Police said the family had been notified of the arrest. See more about that here.

Stan Patz had his son declared legally dead in 2001 so he could sue Ramos, who has never been criminally charged with the boy's death and denies harming the boy. A civil judge in 2004 found Ramos to be responsible for the child's death.

Choose Guard Dogs for Home Security | Home Improvement ...

Choose Guard Dogs for Home Security photoThere are various burglary alarms and home surveillance systems available, designed to help you protect your home. Although they are good in their own rights, nothing compares to an old fashioned guard dog. Guard dogs have been used for generations ? to help people protect their homes and their belongings.

For many years, guard dogs have helped to scare off burglars and thieves. Although most have gotten used to dogs now days, nothing fends off a thief more than a vicious dog grabbing his ankle and clamping down. Almost all guard dogs have serious bites and can seriously injure a burglar. Guard dogs are trained to protect one?s home ? and they will do so no matter what.

When you get a guard dog, you should always make sure that you let him know who is safe to be around your home. You don?t want the dog to be vicious towards everyone, as friends and family are certainly allowed to be around your home. Most guard dogs are left outside of the home, with some deciding to keep them indoors. Indoor dogs are great, as they will instantly catch a burglar the second he decides to break into your home.

If you plan to keep your guard dog indoors, you should always have a supply of food and water available, as he will be there when you aren?t. You will also need to give him access to an outdoor area as well, so he can use the bathroom. A fenced in yard is an ideal place for a guard dog to go outside, as he can come and go as he pleases. Sometimes, a burglar will try and sneak around the back entrance ? which is where giving a guard dog outside access can really come in handyBefore buying the dog, you should always carefully research the species and where you plan to get your dog from. Police dogs or dogs that have been trained for protection are ideal, as they already know how to defend things. Dobermans and Pit Bulls are great for protection as well, simply because they are well known for being very vicious.

If you carefully research your options and get your guard dog from a reliable source, you shouldn?t have much of anything to worry about. You should never get your dog from a lesser known or poor source, as the dog may be poorly trained or not in good health. A guard dog can be a great addition to any home ? providing you get a dog in good health and more than capable to fend of burglars.
