Researchers Examine Psychological Effects of FB Unfriending

Hitting that "unfriend" button may cause emotional more damage than you'd imagine.

This might not come as too much of a surprise, but research suggests there can be some significant psychological trauma following social network "unfriending".

While most of us use social networks as a convenient means to stay connected with our friends and acquaintances, others may become particularly invested in their pseudo-relationships established over Facebook.

Earlier this year, researchers at Chapman university published a study in the journal, Computers in Human Behavior, examining the psychological effects of being unfriended on a social networking website.

Unsurprisingly, the researchers found, "Intense Facebook usage may mean that users are particularly invested in their relationships with their Facebook friends and thus may respond with greater rumination and negative emotion when they lose one of these friends, which compromises how they are presenting themselves and being perceived by others online."

But when exactly does being unfriended hurt the most?

?To some extent, being the individual who initiates the Facebook friendship ? a clear, direct online act that is signified with a marker ? places an individual in a less powerful position, as they must wait and see if their friend request is accepted, rejected or simply ignored," the researchers explained. "Individuals who are unfriended by someone they initially 'friended' may wonder why the unfriender even accepted the friend request, and such thoughts could give rise to rumination and negative emotion,?

What was surprising about the study was the fact that people experienced worse emotional pain when the reason they were unfriended was because of something that happened over Facebook, rather than something in the real world. While it may not be representative of all social network users, the study does provide some interesting insight into how invested we have become in our social network "friends".

Best Bets: Bad day for Liam Neeson in 'Taken 2'

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

This week, two long-awaited movies -- "Taken 2" and "Frankenweenie" -- hit the cinema. Plus, "Princess Bride" gets a 25th anniversary Blu-ray, and an all African-American cast stars in a remake of "Steel Magnolias."

TUESDAY: 'Princess Bride'
"Inconceivable!" "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." "Anybody want a peanut?" The wonderfully quotable "Princess Bride" turns 25 this month, and a 25th anniversary Blu-ray offers a fun batch of extras, including an all-new featurette called "True Love: The Princess Bride Phenomenon." Other goodies include interviews with the cast and crew, a video diary from star Cary Elwes and commentaries by director Rob Reiner and screenwriter William Goldman (who also wrote the novel upon which the film is based). Have fun storming the castle! (On sale Oct. 2.)

FRIDAY: 'Taken 2' and 'Frankenweenie'
In 2008's "Taken," Liam Neeson turned into a killing machine after his daughter was kidnapped. So how to reboot that scenario for "Taken 2"? This time around, it's his ex-wife who's taken by the same evil group from the first film. What are the odds? Also opening this week is the full-length version of "Frankenweenie," famous as the short film that got Tim Burton fired from Disney in the 1980s. Now that Burton's a big-name director, the studio gave him big money and resources to turn the idea into a big-screen, full-length 3-D release. The plot hasn't changed over the decade: Kid scientist Victor Frankenstein brings his dog Sparky back from the dead, and to no one's shock but his, that wasn't a great idea. (Both movies open Oct. 5.)

SUNDAY: 'Steel Magnolias'

The original "Steel Magnolias" came out way back in 1989, but if you've ever seen an armadillo groom's cake at a wedding, you know its influence still lingers. Now Lifetime has remade the classic Southern tearjerker with an all African-American cast. The new film features Condola Rashad (Phylicia and Ahmad's daughter) in the Julia Roberts' role of Shelby, with Queen Latifah in the Sally Field role as Shelby's mother. Also starring are Phylicia Rashad herself, Alfre Woodard and Jill Scott. (Oct. 7, 9 p.m., Lifetime.)

Elusive element 113, long sought by scientists, finally created in Japan

If confirmed, the achievement will mark the first time Japan has discovered a new element, and should make Japan the first Asian country with naming rights to a member of the periodic table.?

By Clara Moskowitz,?LiveScience Senior Writer / September 27, 2012

Scientists at Japan's RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-based Science say they've finally succeeded in creating the synthetic element 113.

Scientists in Japan think they've finally created the elusive element 113, one of the missing items on the periodic table of elements.

' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Element 113 is an atom with 113 protons in its nucleus ? a type of matter that must be created inside a laboratory because it is not found naturally on Earth.?Heavier and heavier synthetic elements?have been created over the years, with the most massive one being element 118, temporarily named ununoctium.

But element 113 has been stubbornly hard to create. After years of trying, researchers at the RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science in Japan said today (Sept. 26) they finally did so. On Aug. 12, the unstable element was formed and quickly decayed, leaving the team with data to cite as proof of the accomplishment.

"For over nine years, we have been searching for data conclusively identifying element 113, and now that at last we have it, it feels like a great weight has been lifted from our shoulders," Kosuke Morita, leader of the research group, said in a statement. [Graphic: Nature's Tiniest Particles Explained]

If confirmed, the achievement will mark the first time Japan has discovered a?new element, and should make Japan the first Asian country with naming rights to a member of the?periodic table. Until now, only scientists in the United States, Russia and Germany have had that chance.

"I would like to thank all the researchers and staff involved in this momentous result, who persevered with the belief that one day 113 would be ours," Morita said. "For our next challenge, we look to the uncharted territory of element 119 and beyond."

Scientists are continually trying to create bigger and bigger atoms, both for the joy of discovery and for the knowledge these new elements can offer about how atoms work.

Most things in the universe are made of very simple elements, such as hydrogen (which has one proton), carbon (six) and oxygen (eight). For each proton, atoms generally have roughly the same number of neutrons and electrons. Yet the more protons and neutrons that are packed into an atom's nucleus, the more unstable the atom can become. Scientists wonder if there is a?limit to how large atoms can be.

The first synthetic element was created in 1940, and so far 20 different elements have been made. All of these are unstable and last only seconds, at most, before breaking apart into smaller elements.

To synthesize element 113, Morita and his team collided zinc nuclei (with 30 protons each) into a thin layer of bismuth (which contains 83 protons). When 113 was created, it quickly decayed by shedding alpha particles, which consist of two protons and two neutrons each. This process happened six times, turning element 113 into element 111, then 109, 107, 105, 103 and finally, element 101, Mendelevium (also a synthetic element).

Morita's group seemed to create element 113 in experiments conducted in 2004 and 2005, but the complete decay chain was not observed, so the discovery couldn't be confirmed. Now that this specific pattern resulting in Mendelevium has been seen, the scientists say it "provides unambiguous proof that element 113 is the origin of the chain."

The Humane Society of the United States Offers Reward on Recent ...

Agencies urge public to report information

Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust

In response to recent reports of illegal sea turtle killings on Maui and the discovery of shells and gear believed to be used to drown the turtles, The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust urge Hawaii residents to report any information on these killings. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $2,500 from the groups for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for these crimes.

?The Humane Society of the United States and the Department of Land and Natural Resources launched our tipline to stop crimes against Hawaii?s precious wildlife and to create a mechanism for the community to confidentially report criminal activity,? said Inga Gibson, Hawaii state director for The HSUS. ?We encourage anyone with information about these or other illegal sea turtle killings to immediately report such information to authorities.?

In May, the Department of Land and Natural Resources, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service reminded the community that sea turtles remain protected under state and federal laws. Under state law, sea turtles are protected by the Hawai?i Revised Statutes (Chapter 195D) and Hawai?i Administrative Rules (13-124). DLNR Chairman William Aila also clarified that even though a petition for de-listing was filed, filing alone does not affect nor negate the protected status of these animals. He further urged the public to act responsibly and not attempt to touch, disturb, feed, pursue, ride, harass, harm or otherwise injure these animals.

?The Maui Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement continues to work with its federal partner agencies in investigating the killing of these sea turtles. We are asking for the public?s assistance in providing information to enable us take law enforcement action against the perpetrators of these crimes,? said Clarence Yamamoto, Maui DOCARE Branch Chief.

Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa stated, "We have rules protecting our endangered species in Maui County. This kind of blatant disregard for both state and federal law is inexcusable and cruel. These are serious crimes.?
?
Facts:

  • In January of this year, The HSUS funded the development of a confidential, toll-free tipline for the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement to report information on wildlife crimes.
  • To date, tipline-reward postings have also been offered for the illegal killing of four monk seals, two each on Kauai and Molokai, and the illegal transport and release of deer onto the Big Island.
  • Five species of turtles, including the critically endangered hawksbill and threatened green sea who often co-exist in the same areas, along with the loggerhead, leatherback and olive ridley, are all protected under both state and federal law.?The survival of all of these species is threatened by habitat loss, climate change, commercial fisheries by-catch, entanglement in fishing gear and marine debris, and illegal poaching.
  • It is illegal to harm, injure, kill or harass sea turtles. Under state law, killing a sea turtle may carry a fine up of to $10,000 and up to one year in jail or both, and administrative fines. Under the federal Endangered Species Act, killing a turtle may result in fines exceeding $3500 and up to one year in jail or both.

? ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Anyone with information on the illegal killing of sea turtles is asked to call the HSUS/DLNR reward tipline at 1-855-DLNR-TIP or the USFWS Enforcement hotline at 1-808-861-8525. Stranded and entangled sea turtles should be reported immediately to NOAA at 808-983-5730.??????????

Gunman fired day of Minneapolis office shooting

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? A man who burst into a sign-making business in Minneapolis, fatally shooting the owner and three others before turning the gun on himself, had been fired from the company earlier in the day, police said Friday.

Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan identified the shooter, who injured at least four others in the Thursday afternoon attack, as Andrew J. Engeldinger, 36, of Minneapolis.

Engeldinger had been fired from his job at Accent Signage Systems earlier in the day, Dolan said. He came back about 4:25 p.m., parked his car, walked into the loading dock area and immediately started shooting people. But it also appeared he may have spared some of his former colleagues.

"It's clear he did walk by some people, very clear," Dolan said.

Investigators who searched a house Thursday night in south Minneapolis where Engeldinger lived found another gun and packaging for 10,000 rounds of ammunition in the house.

"He's obviously been practicing in how to use that gun," Dolan said.

Among those killed were businessman Reuven Rahamim, 61, who was the owner of Accent Signage Systems Inc. in Bryn Mawr, a mainly residential neighborhood on the northwest side of the city, son-in-law Chad Blumenfield said in a statement.

"Other members of the Accent family tragically lost their lives as well, and we mourn their loss," Blumenfield said. He provided no details.

UPS driver Keith Basinski was also killed, the mail service said in a statement Friday. UPS Northern Plains District President Jill Schubert did not say why Basinski was at the Accent offices. She said the company was "profoundly shocked and saddened" at his death.

Authorities have not revealed the names of the others killed.

audreymiller 300x265 Woman Protects Cat From Husband By, er, Shooting HimApparently, Audrey Miller (pictured) was arguing with her husband when he threatened to shoot one of her beloved cats with a pellet gun.

Her response? She shot him in the stomach instead.

This all happened in Harris County, Texas. Luckily, the husband is currently in stable condition after surviving the surgery to repair the damage the .40 caliber handgun did to him.

Now, I don?t condone shooting most of the time. But I also don?t condone threatening pets with violence. After all, they are smaller than we are and trust us to take care of them.

Still, I don?t condone the shooting. Really.

Information Technology Parks to boost Philippine Business Process ...

Home ? Editorial ? Information Technology Parks to boost Philippine Business Process Outsourcing industry

Manila, Philippines ? INFORMATION Technology (IT) Parks are rising in the provinces and in Metro Manila to provide the infrastructure and connectivity needed to boost the robust growth of the country?s Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry. The new IT Parks outside Metro Manila are in the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod, Iloilo, Bi?an, Tarlac, Baguio, Cabanatuan, Dasmari?as, Dumaguete, General Santos, Lipa, Naga, San Fernando, and Urdaneta, and in the municipalities of Marilao, Bulacan; Bacong and Sibulan, Negros Oriental; Rosario and Silang, Cavite.

BPO firms are the predominant locators in IT parks registered with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority. The government offers tax incentives to BPO firms, including value-added tax and income tax exemption. The IT-BPO industry is today one of the country?s biggest job creators. In 2011, the sector recorded $11 billion investments and created 638,000 jobs. For 2012, it expects $13 billion revenues on a labor force of 764,000. By 2016, it projects $27 billion revenues and jobs for 1.3 million Filipino workers.

The rising demand for call center services leads the BPO boom. The Philippines holds a major portion of the global outsourcing market, due to the English proficiency of Filipinos. Call centers count among its clients giant multinationals. Pharmaceutical firms outsource their medical transcriptions in the country.

This year, several grants and subsidies were earmarked by various agencies and institutions for the sector?s educational and technical development. The Asian Development Bank granted P27.3 million in technical assistance for skills enhancement. State universities nationwide were allocated a budget of P125 million to fund IT-BPO-based programs. A P450-million subsidy was set aside by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority for training. The Information and Communication Technology Office of the Department of Science and Technology allocated P350 million to support the IT-BPO industry.

We wish Philippine Economic Zone Authority Director General Dr. Lilia B. de Lima and Information and Communication Technology Office Executive Director Department of Science and Technology Undersecretary Louis Napoleon C. Casambre, all the best and success in their unwavering support to promote the global competitiveness of the information and communication technology sector. CONGRATULATIONS AND MABUHAY!

Honey bees fight back against Varroa

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The parasitic mite Varroa destructor is a major contributor to the recent mysterious death of honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Genome Biology finds that specific proteins, released by damaged larvae and in the antennae of adult honey bees, can drive hygienic behavior of the adults and promote the removal of infected larvae from the hive.

V. destructor sucks the blood (hemolymph) of larval and adult bees leaving them weakened and reducing the ability of their immune systems to fight off infections. Not that honey bees have strong immune systems in the first place since they have fewer immunity genes than solitary insects such as flies and moths. These tiny mites can also spread viral disease between hosts. This double onslaught is thought to be a significant contributor to Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).

But all is not lost -- honey bees have evolved a way to fight back: hygienic behavior where diseased or parasitized larvae are removed from their brood cells, and Varroa-sensitive hygienic behavior which they use to reduce the number of reproductive mites on remaining larvae.

To find exactly how bees respond to hive infections, researchers from Canada looked at the natural behavioral of bees in the presence of damaged larvae and compared this to protein differences in the larvae and adults. After scanning 1200 proteins the team found that several proteins, including LOC552009 (of unknown function but similar to ApoO), found in the antennae of adults were associated with both uncapping brood cells and the removal of larvae. Other proteins were involved in olfaction or in signal transduction, probably helping the adults find infected larvae amongst a brood.

In damaged larvae, transglutaminase, a protein involved in blood clotting, was upregulated, which appeared to be a key component in regulating the adult's behavior. Other proteins indicated adaptations to help fight infection, including chitin biosynthesis and immune responses.

Dr Leonard Foster from CHIBI at the University of British Columbia, who led this research said, "Bee keepers have previously focused on selecting bees with traits such as enhanced honey production, gentleness and winter survival. We have found a set of proteins which could be used to select colonies on their ability to resist Varroa mite infestation and can be used to find individuals with increased hygienic behavior. Given the increasing resistance of Varroa to available drugs this would provide a natural way of ensuring honey farming and potentially survival of the species."

When we?re feeling sluggish or just need some energy most of us turn to coffee or some kind of energy drink. The health conscious energy seeker will skip past these drinks and instead reach for a banana. Bananas are a great source of potassium, about 420 milligrams in a medium size banana.

So why do we need potassium?

Our bodies need potassium to maintain normal blood pressure. A normal healthy balance of sodium and potassium are what regulate blood pressure. Too much sodium and too little potassium, results in hypertension. Prolonged hypertension or high blood pressure may result in other health related problems in the future.

I don?t like bananas, do other foods have potassium?

Don?t worry, there are many other foods that contain potassium and in some cases contain much more potassium than bananas. Potassium can be found in many vegetables and fruits. Here is a quick list of just ten healthy food items that contain high amounts of potassium.

Herbert Lom, boss in Pink Panther movies, dies

Everett Collection

Herbert Lom, left, and Peter Sellers in "The Pink Panther Strikes Again."

By Reuters

LONDON -- Czech-born film star Herbert Lom, best known as the deranged Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus in the "Pink Panther" comedies, has died, according to British media. He was 95.

His agent was not immediately able to confirm the reports that Lom died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday. They did not specify where, but he had been based in London.

Born into a poor aristocratic family in Prague in 1917, he shortened his complicated name to Lom and appeared in a handful of locally made movies before emigrating to Britain before the outbreak of World War Two and making his home there.

There he built a career that spanned over 100 films and included more than its fair share of villains.

"In English eyes all foreigners are sinister," he was quoted as saying resignedly in 1991.

He portrayed Napoleon Bonaparte twice, including in "War and Peace" in 1956 alongside Henry Fonda and Audrey Hepburn, and the King of Siam in the first London production of the stage musical "The King and I" in 1953.

Two years later he collaborated with Peter Sellers in the dark comedy "The Ladykillers", and they would work together again in the 1960s and 1970s on the Pink Panther series.

In them Lom played the increasingly crazed Dreyfus alongside Sellers' hapless Inspector Clouseau, and the success of his character owed much to Lom's own improvisations.

In an interview with the Independent newspaper in 2004, Lom recalled that it was him who invented Dreyfus's nervous twitch that became his trademark gesture.

"I started winking out of nervousness, and couldn't stop," he said. "It wasn't in the script but (director) Blake Edwards loved it. But it became a problem. I made those films for 20 years, and after 10 years they ran out of good scripts.

Hurricane Irene polluted Catskills watershed

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The water quality of lakes and coastal systems will be altered if hurricanes intensify in a warming world, according to a Yale study in Geophysical Research Letters.

Bryan Yoon, the study's co-author and a doctoral student at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, found that last summer during Hurricane Irene -- the worst storm in the New York area in 200 years -- record amounts of dissolved organic matter darkened Catskill waters and affected the Ashokan Reservoir that supplies New York City with drinking water.

"This is the biggest rain event ever sampled for the region," said Yoon, who conducted the study with Pete Raymond, professor of ecosystem ecology at Yale.

As a primary source of drinking water for New York City, the Catskill Mountains is designated as forest preserve, and roughly 62 percent of the watershed studied is protected by New York State. Over a two-day period in late August 2011, Irene dropped over 11 inches of rain -- 17 percent of the average annual rainfall -- on Esopus Creek that feeds the Ashokan.

Yoon found that the volume of water discharged by the creek increased 330-fold, and the creek exported an unprecedented amount of dissolved organic matter to the Ashokan, equivalent to 43 percent of its average annual export. Yoon likened the increase in dissolved organic matter to a person being fed 40 percent of his annual food in a few days.

Although not discussed as often as other water quality topics such as turbidity, dissolved organic matter plays a critical role in the aquatic environment and for the provision of clean drinking water. In moderate quantities, dissolved organic matter also provides food and nutrients for microbial communities.

In excessive amounts, however, dissolved organic matter could lead to numerous environmental problems, Yoon's study found. Dissolved organic matter binds with metal pollutants and transports them; interferes with ultraviolet processes that reduce pathogens in water; affects aquatic metabolism; and leads to the formation of carcinogenic disinfection byproducts, such as trihalomethanes during chlorination.

"All of those problems become more serious as larger quantities of dissolved organic matter are transported to lakes and coastal systems," he said. "Hurricane Irene was a prime example that there is no limit to the amount of dissolved organic matter that can be exported by extreme rain events. Surprisingly, concentrations of dissolved organic matter didn't get diluted."

Raymond said that frequent hurricanes will flush more organic matter out of the ground and into lakes, reservoirs and coastal waters, potentially altering their biogeochemical cycles.

Apple's A6 CPU actually clocked at around 13GHz, per new Geekbench report

As the initial wave of iPhone 5 reviews hit, it looked as if Apple's dual-core A6 processor was sporting a clock speed of around 1GHz. We saw reports (and confirmed with our own handset) ranging between 1.00 and 1.02GHz, but a new Geekbench build (v2.3.6) has today revealed a horse of a different color. According to Primate Labs' own John Poole, the latest version of the app -- which landed on the App Store today -- "features a dramatically improved processor frequency detection algorithm, which consistently reports the A6's frequency as 1.3GHz." In speaking with us, he affirmed that "earlier versions of Geekbench had trouble determining the A6's frequency, which lead to people claiming the A6's frequency as 1.0GHz as it was the most common value Geekbench reported."

When we asked if he felt that the A6 was capable of dynamically overclocking itself for more demanding tasks, he added: "I don't believe the A6 has any form of processor boost. In our testing, we found the 1.3GHz was constant regardless of whether one core or both cores were busy." Our own in-house iPhone 5 is regularly displaying 1.29GHz, while a tipster's screenshot (hosted after the break) clearly display 1.30GHz. Oh, and if anyone wants to dip their iPhone 5 in a vat of liquid nitrogen while trying to push things well over the 2GHz level, we certainly wouldn't try to dissuade your efforts.

[Thanks, Bruno]

BBC apologizes to Queen Elizabeth over radical cleric leak

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's BBC apologized to Queen Elizabeth on Tuesday after a senior journalist reported her private views about one of the country's best known terrorism suspects, an embarrassing disclosure for a monarch who avoids public political statements.

BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner broadcast details of a private conversation with the queen during which she supposedly told him she had complained to the last government about radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri.

The queen was said to be upset that Britain had not arrested him after he preached fiery anti-Western sermons outside a mosque in London after the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.

That was awkward for a head of state who has no political or executive role and is expected to stay neutral in public. The queen has never given a media interview and typically avoids controversial topics in her speeches.

The Egyptian-born cleric lost an appeal in the European courts on Monday and faces extradition from Britain to the United States [nL5E8KOB99]. Washington accuses him of supporting al Qaeda, aiding a kidnapping in Yemen and plotting to open a U.S. training camp for militants.

Delays in arresting the cleric angered many in Britain. Newspapers campaigned for his extradition, with the Sun using the headline "Sling Your Hook", a reference to the metal hook he wore in place of a hand he lost in disputed circumstances.

The public broadcaster, mainly funded by a fee paid by everyone under 75 who owns a television, said the meeting had taken place some years ago.

"The conversation should have remained private and the BBC and Frank deeply regret this breach of confidence. It was wholly inappropriate," the BBC said. Buckingham Palace had no comment.

A former banker, Gardner has worked for the BBC since 1997. He was partly paralyzed in 2004 after being shot on assignment in Saudi Arabia.

Elizabeth holds a weekly private audience with the prime minister to discuss topical issues. There have been 12 prime ministers since her coronation in 1953, from Winston Churchill to David Cameron.

Republic, a group that campaigns for the monarchy's abolition, accused the royal family of a "cynical PR ploy" designed to win popular support.

"The decision to disclose this one conversation while keeping all else secret smacks of a deliberate PR stunt to put the queen on the right side of public opinion," the group's head Graham Smith said.

After well-received celebrations to mark the queen's 60 years on the throne this summer, the royal family has suffered two embarrassing episodes in recent weeks.

Naked pictures of Elizabeth's grandson Prince Harry at a Las Vegas hotel were published around the world, swiftly followed by topless photos of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge -- the former Kate Middleton who is the wife of Harry's brother William, second in line to the throne.

Batanga

There's no shortage of streaming music services on the Web that deliver an entertaining mix of music?Pandora, Slacker, and Songza?are just three of the many companies vying for your ears. Batanga joins the fray with a free app that has a decidedly Latin focus. Batanga serves up the same quality music as its iPad app, but with a far more user-friendly interface that makes it a streaming music service worth a listen.

Getting Started
Unlike Batanga for iPad, the browser-based version doesn't require you to create an account, but you may wish to if you want to create a station and sync with the mobile version (there's also an option to log in using your Facebook credentials).

The main difference between Batanga's Web and iPad app is the interface. The mobile version suffers from a splintered interface that has individual screens for each section (Now Playing, My Stations, Genres, Artists, Tracks, New Station); Batanga the website has a far more consolidated set up that makes the entire experience more user friendly.

Using Batanga
You start with Batanga by either key an artist name or song into the search engine box or clicking one of the genre channels (including the likes of Salsa, Raggaeton, and Cumbia) just south of it. Audio playback automatically begins when you select an artist or genre channel. Batanga's audio is what you'd expect from a streaming audio service?crisp with decent highs and lows. Audiophiles will probably sneer at it, but less- discerning listeners shouldn't find fault with the audio. As with other music services you can like or dislike songs to help tailor the listening experience, but for some reason they are in Spanish (the other portions of the site are in English).

As a track plays, Batanga displays useful information such as song or album title, plus similar tracks that you should check out, which aids in music discovery. For an app that's presented as having a heavy Latin focus?and it does?there's a surprising number of English language artists (such as AC/DC, Frank Sinatra, and The Rolling Stones). There's lots of music to enjoy, including lyrics which you can use to sing along to the music.

The Artists section lets you find music makers by applying filters such as music genre, leading voice (based on gender), language, decade, and other differentiators. It's an unusual music discovery method that I liked?I wouldn't mind seeing other apps adopting a similar tool. Not only does Artists serve you musicians that match your selected criteria, but it displays the number of tracks each act has in Batanga's library, the songs' popularity, and a button that lets you add the track to the currently playing station. The Tracks section works in a similar manner except that it helps you sift through songs instead of artists. Note: The site would ocassionally freeze and not recognize my inputs. This was uickly remedied with a page refresh.

The Wrap
Those who enjoy Latin music will find a lot to like in Batanga. There are lots of Spanish genres, plus a few English speaking bands tossed in for good measure. Songza remains our Editor's Choice among strictly free streaming music sites due to its creative playlist-themed service, but Batanga is also worthy a try.

Google and Windows 8, working together

Summary: Microsoft and Google are archrivals on the business front, but they share a lot of customers. It's a classic example of co-opetition. Surprisingly, Google services and Windows 8 apps work well together. Here's what you can expect when you connect Chrome, Gmail, and other Google products and services to Windows 8.

Google services and Windows 8 work surprisingly well together, once you know how to get things connected properly. In the case of Chrome, recent versions support both the Windows desktop and the Windows 8 (Metro) interface.

Sri Lanka steps up security after clashes | Pakistan Today | Latest ...

COLOMBO?-?World Twenty20 hosts Sri Lanka are to beef up security after angry fans clashed with baton wielding police in Hambantota where the home side lost a match to South Africa, officials said Sunday.

Local residents in the southern port town stormed the ground after they were told that tickets for Saturday's match at the 35,000-capacity Mahinda Rajapakse International Stadium had been sold out, a security official told AFP.

"The crowds got very boisterous and they smashed the barricades and forcibly entered the grounds," the official said, asking not to be named. "The baton charge did not deter them. A few thousand got in."

Heavy rains shortened the group C game to seven-overs-a-side, which South Africa won by by 32 runs.

Witnesses said local fans pelted stones at vehicles leaving the match venue after Sri Lanka lost the match. A heavy presence of the elite Special Task Forces commandos could not deter the angry crowds.

"Their anger was because they could not enter the grounds," another official said. "When they broke down the barricades and came in they started shouting and making a big rumpus."

Camillus Abeygunawardena, the top security officer for the tournament, said there were unruly scenes outside the stadium, but insisted that players and spectators inside the stadium were well protected.

"The problem was that locals residents wanted to get in, but they did not have ticket," Abeygunawardena said. "That is when trouble started."

With Hambantota not due to host any more matches, he said security would be stepped up for the rest of the tournament in Pallekele and Colombo, but was confident there will be no repeat of Saturday's incident.

The clashes between police and fans came despite an unprecedented security operation for the tournament, the biggest sporting event ever to be hosted by Sri Lanka.

Bodyguards from the Ministerial Security Division (MSD) and commandos of the elite Special Task Force have been deployed to guard players in a drill usually reserved for visiting heads of state.

Armed security has been deployed at team hotels where floors occupied by players have been declared out of bounds for other hotel guests.

Sri Lanka's Tamil separatist war ended in May 2009 with government forces declaring victory over the separatist Tamil rebels, but no international match or players in Sri Lanka had been targeted by the militants.

US Differs Debt Crisis

US lawmakers could push Fiscal Cliff deadlines into Y 2013

The US Congress may be arriving at a consensus on how to avoid falling off the Fiscal Cliff on 31 December by simply putting off its own deadline for most of the major year-end budget and tax decisions.

That approach would delay the day of reckoning while also allowing more time for compromise in a Congress that has battled for 2 yrs over how best to reduce huge budget deficits.

No formal agreements have been reached, however, and turning a consensus into an actual deal that avoids jolting the markets or economy will depend on the results of the November 6 general election.

The Cliff refers to the year-end deadline for the expiration of hundreds of billions of dollars worth of tax cuts and the triggering of $109-B in across-the-board spending cuts. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has said the scenario could throw the country into recession.

Congress created the hazardous end-of-year deadline in August 2011 when it agreed to a deficit deal as a way out of a deadlock over raising the US debt ceiling.

?

In recent weeks, lawmakers from conservative Republicans to liberal Democrats in the Senate and House of Representatives, have alluded to surprisingly similar hopes for the high-stakes ?Lame Duck? work session that will follow the November presidential and congressional elections.

They would put aside the $109-B in ?automatic? across-the-board spending cuts that otherwise would hit military and domestic programs equally.

They would make some new, possibly smaller down payments on deficit-reduction for the near-term. Then they would write a new deadline, maybe 31 March or 30 June to come up with a $4-T deficit-reduction program over 10 yrs; and devise a new method for forcing a divided Congress to act.

The entire exercise would be aimed at finding a long-term fix for US fiscal problems without the jolt of indiscriminate spending cuts and tax hikes that would occur under current law.

The threat of a possible recession after such blanket spending cuts now preoccupies Washington.

Among the fearful are the big-company CEOs represented by the Business Roundtable, for example, and Ben Bernanke, the chairman of the US Federal Reserve, who briefed members of Congress this week after declaring that

Taoiseach meets Pope Benedict during Rome visit

irishtimes.com - Last Updated: Saturday, September 22, 2012, 15:58

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has met with Pope Benedict XVI in Rome.

The Fine Gael leader?s meeting with the Pontiff is his first since he castigated the Vatican for its inaction in dealing with the issue of child abuse in Ireland.

He is in Rome as part of a two-day meeting of the Centrist Democrats International group hosted by the Italian leader, Mario Monti.

The group is affiliated with the European People?s Party, of which Fine Gael is a member.

Mr Kenny was among a group of European political leaders who met Pope Benedict at his residence at Castel Gandolfo.

Last July in the D?il the Taoiseach launched an unprecedented attack on the Vatican, accusing Catholic hierarchy of putting the Church ahead of child rape victims.

In a damning assessment of Rome?s attitude to paedophile priests, Mr Kenny said investigations into the cover-up of clerical abuse had exposed a dysfunctional, elite hierarchy determined to frustrate investigations.

He also warned the Holy See that religion did not rule Ireland.
